Minimalist Grammar Transition-Based Parsing
نویسنده
چکیده
Current chart-based parsers of Minimalist Grammars exhibit prohibitively high polynomial complexity that makes them unusable in practice. This paper presents a transition-based parser for Minimalist Grammars that approximately searches through the space of possible derivations by means of beam search, and does so very efficiently: the worst case complexity of building one derivation is O(n) and the best case complexity is O(n). This approximated inference can be guided by a trained probabilistic model that can condition on larger context than standard chart-based parsers. The transitions of the parser are very similar to the transitions of bottom-up shift-reduce parsers for ContextFree Grammars, with additional transitions for online reordering of words during parsing in order to make non-projective derivations projective.

Memory Resource Allocation in Top-Down Minimalist Parsing
This paper provides a linking theory between the minimalist grammar formalism and off-line behavioural data. We examine the transient stack states of a top-down parser for Minimalist Grammars as it analyzes embedded sentences in English, Dutch and German. We find that the number of time steps that a derivation tree node persist on the parser’s stack derives the observed contrasts in English cen...
متن کاملPhases and Complexity in Phrase Structure Building
The Minimalist Program (Chomsky 1995–2001) sketches a model that aims to be empirically adequate and theoretically motivated but that does not fit in any clear way with specific performance algorithms such as parsing or generation even though much emphasis is put on “interface properties”. In this paper I propose that a Minimalist Grammar formalization (an extension of Stabler’s 1997 proposal) ...
متن کاملParsing Minimalist Languages with Interpreted Regular Tree Grammars
Minimalist Grammars (MGs) (Stabler, 1997) are a formalisation of Chomsky’s minimalist program (Chomsky, 1995), which currently dominates much of mainstream syntax. MGs are simple and intuitive to work with, and are mildly context sensitive (Michaelis, 1998), putting them in the right general class for human language (Joshi, 1985).1 Minimalist Grammars are known to be more succinct than their Mu...
متن کاملResource Logics and Minimalist Grammars
This ESSLLI workshop is devoted to connecting the linguistic use of resource logics and categorial grammar to minimalist grammars and related generative grammars. Minimalist grammars are relatively recent, and although they stem from a long tradition of work in transformational grammar, they are largely informal apart from a few research papers. The study of resource logic, on the other hand, i...
متن کاملA probabilistic top-down parser for minimalist grammars
This paper describes a probabilistic top-down parser for minimalist grammars. Top-down parsers have the great advantage of having a certain predictive power during the parsing, which takes place in a left-to-right reading of the sentence. Such parsers have already been well-implemented and studied in the case of Context-Free Grammars (see for example [Roa01]), which are already top-down, but th...
